The Challenge

As parents and teachers, there are times our preschoolers challenge everything or exhibit challenging behavior toward others. While it can be beneficial to know why the child’s behavior is inappropriate, there is not always time to analyze and discuss. The following tips may be helpful in dealing with a challenging behavior:

• Change the child’s surroundings. Sometimes moving a child away from
loud music, TV, or other children will immediately create a more relaxing
and soothing environment for the child.

• Model the behavior you desire. Children look up to adults and learn by
example. Behaving in a positive manner in front of the child is sometimes
 all that’s needed!

• Don’t over-react! Our anxiety and attitude toward the challenging behavior
often makes it worse. Take a second or two to think before reacting.
