How Much is Too Much? Avoiding a High Pressure Preschool

One of the most important aspects of preschool is to instill a love of learning in the child. Sometimes, preschools become too focused on making sure children are learning advanced skills, and they usemethods suited for older children to try to achieve this. This can lead to frustration and boredom for the child.

How can you tell if your child enjoys preschool? Some separation anxiety is normal, especially if thechild has never been away from you. However, if this goes beyond the first few weeks of school andyour child is not adjusting or is refusing to go to school, it may be a sign that the school is not a goodmatch for your child.

If your child seems to be having trouble, ask the teacher if you may come in and observe the class. If itseems that the expectations are too high, have a discussion with the teacher or director and have themexplain their philosophy for the methods used. Then you can make a sound judgment about whetherthe program is a good fit for your child.

Developmentally appropriate programs meet children at their level and help them learn in ways thatare suited to their own learning style. A program that allows your child the opportunity to learn in waysthat include his natural desires to engage and explore will provide him with all he needs to be ready forkindergarten. While he may not be able to read or have math facts memorized, he will have a love ofschool and learning and that is the most important skill to take to kindergarten. Preschool is a time oflearning, but it should also be fun!
